The Priory The name Beauly is thought to come from the words of Mary Queen of Scots when she stayed there in 1564, ‘un beau lieu’ (What a beautiful place). It is indeed a beautiful place and a great place for a break with a range of excellent traditional shops and places to eat. The town has far reaching history with traces of people living there from 2000BC. However the inception of the Priory in the early 13th Century secured it position in history and leaves a lasting tribute to the village with the elm at the entrance to the graveyard believed to be the oldest elm in Europe at 800 years old.
The more recent past belongs to the Scottish clans with the Lovat Frasers, Chisholm’s and Mackenzie’s all associated with the village. Warfare has also played its part with the Lovat Scouts founded in 1899 by a Lord Lovat, great grandfather of the current Lord, to fight the Boer war. This tradition continued with his son then being honoured for his bravery during the 2nd world war. The Priory
